Sustainability at Jackson ImmunoResearch

Emma Robertson

At Jackson ImmunoResearch, sustainability is an integral part of our commitment to scientific excellence and corporate social responsibility. We recognize the importance of minimizing our environmental impact, while supporting the advancements of life science research. From reducing waste and enhancing operational efficiency, our sustainability efforts are designed to align with both the global environmental goals and values within the scientific community. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, we strive to make a positive impact on the planet without compromising the quality and reliability that researchers and scientists worldwide expect from our products.

In our labs, we make a conscious effort to reduce waste; from recycling gloves and pipette tips to using glassware when applicable. Disposable gloves, especially nitrile gloves, are often  made from materials that take a long time to decompose in landfill sites. Recycling gloves diverts these materials from landfills, extending their lifespan and reducing the burden on waste management systems. Recycling gloves also utilizes existing materials, thereby reducing the need to extract and process raw materials. For several years now, we have worked with TerraCycle, a company that collects and recycles our used nitrile gloves. So far, we have recycled 344 lbs (156.0 kgs) of gloves!

At Jackson ImmunoResearch, we lyophilize a majority of our products to reduce the need for refrigerated transport, thereby cutting down on energy consumption and packaging waste. Many of our products are dispensed and stored in glass vials. The products that are sensitive to light, are pipetted in amber glass vials. The benefit of packaging in glass vials rather than plastic is that the vials are 100 % recyclable and can be reused without degrading in quality. All of our products are shipped out in recycled cardboard boxes which are far lighter than cool-boxes filled with solid CO2

Jackson ImmunoResearch promotes sustainability internally to! Our Sustainability Committee works to – educate, and encourage employees on sustainability practices. A major initiative for the Sustainability Committee that has been integrated within the company is a recycling program. We recycle Styrofoam, coffee packets, and various grades of plastics, including #2 (HDPE), #4 (LDPE), and #5 (PP). In the last 12 months, we’ve recycled 1,987lbs (901.3 kgs) of plastic resulting in, 11,543lbs (5,235.8 kgs) of CO2 emissions reduced, 3,046 lbs (1,381.6 kgs) of fossil fuels reduced, 1,668,080 gallons (6,314,369.7 litres) of fresh water conserved,  20lbs (9.07 kgs)of SO2 reduced, 70lbs (31.8 kgs) of N2 reduced, 222lbs (100.7 kgs) of O3 reduced. Recently, the committee and other Jackson ImmunoResearch employees collaborated with The Natural Lands Trust to restore portions of the native meadows and forest on a local preserve by planting trees.

At Jackson ImmunoResearch we are continuously exploring sustainable initiatives to reduce energy consumption. Employees and Sustainability Committee members have been gathering and creating a list of future sustainable practices to be implemented within the workplace.
